December is flying by and the holidays are already around the corner. And that of course includes lots of delicious food and drink. Great fun, but not so convenient if you are trying to watch your diet - because of course you don't want to give up anything. So this year we make it a little easier for you, with a recipe for healthier mulled wine!
This mulled wine is alcohol-free and therefore contains only 60 kcal per 100 millilitres, while a normal mulled wine contains 105! Especially if you drink a few glasses, this can make quite a difference. For 3 glasses, for example, 180 kcal versus 315 kcal!
What's more, it's also really easy to make - you're done in less than 5 minutes!
What you need
- A bottle of grape juice
- Two oranges
- Two or three cinnamon sticks
- Two or three pieces of star anise
- Three tablespoons of cloves
- One tablespoon of nutmeg
- Two oranges
What to do
Put a pan on low heat and pour in the entire bottle of grape juice. Cut the oranges into segments, and add them to the grape juice along with all the spices. Let it stand for a while (do not let it boil over!) until it is well absorbed.
That's all! Easy huh?
And should you still like to make a variant with alcohol, just substitute the grape juice for a bottle of red wine. This may just be the cheapest one you can find, as it will be completely flavoured by all the spices anyway.
By the way, did you know that these spices also do all sorts of good things for your body? Nutmeg, for instance, is anti-inflammatory and cinnamon is good for the cardiovascular system. Moreover, cloves help relieve muscle aches and pains! That is of course a great bonus, and a great excuse to have an extra glass of mulled wine.
Happy holidays!
